A Guide to Female Fertility

Female fertility problems can be related to egg production, egg quality, and embryo implantation. Below, we've outlined common causes, treatment options, and how we can help.

Female Fertility

Factors Affecting Fertility

Age

Not all eggs have the potential to result in a pregnancy due to natural processes that can lead to an imbalance of genetic material. The likelihood of this imbalance notably increases in women from the age of 35.

Ovulation Disorders

Conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or hormonal imbalances can disrupt ovulation, making conception less likely. Other factors like stress, significant weight changes, or excessive exercise can also affect ovulation.

Blocked or Damaged Fallopian Tubes

If a fallopian tube is damaged or blocked, the passage of sperm to the egg can be compromised. Damage can result from infections, previous surgery, or endometriosis.

Endometriosis

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the womb. It can impact fertility by affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining.

Uterine Factors

Structural differences in the uterus can be present from birth or develop due to scarring, fibroids, or polyps. These can affect the uterine environment and hinder embryo implantation.

Reproductive Immunology

The immune system plays a crucial role in implantation and pregnancy. In some cases, immune testing may suggest that treatment to modulate the immune system might be helpful as part of IVF treatment.

Unexplained Infertility

In some cases, standard fertility tests do not reveal a clear cause. At ARGC, we take a comprehensive approach to uncover potential contributing factors. Our advanced assessments, daily monitoring, and tailored treatment strategies help optimise success.

How We Can Help

IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation)

IVF involves stimulating the ovaries to produce multiple eggs, which are then retrieved and fertilised in a laboratory. Once fertilisation occurs, the embryos are monitored, and the healthiest one is transferred into the uterus. Success rates vary based on factors such as age, egg quality, and underlying fertility issues.

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

ICSI is a specialised form of IVF designed for cases where male factor infertility is a concern, such as low sperm count or poor motility. It can also be recommended for couples who have experienced previous IVF cycles with low or no fertilisation. The procedure involves selecting a single healthy sperm and injecting it directly into an egg to improve fertilisation chances.

Reproductive Immunology

Reproductive immunology examines how the immune system affects fertility and pregnancy. Some women experience immune imbalances that can interfere with embryo implantation or cause recurrent miscarriage. We offer a range of advanced treatments, including intralipids, IVIG, steroids, and immunosuppressant therapies, that may help regulate immune responses and improve pregnancy outcomes for women with implantation failure or recurrent miscarriage.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)

IUI is a fertility treatment where prepared sperm is placed directly inside the uterus, increasing the chances of fertilisation. It is a suitable option for women with irregular ovulation and men with minor sperm issues. IUI is also commonly used for single women and same-sex female couples using donor sperm. At ARGC, we take a hyper-personalised approach, providing daily monitoring and precise adjustments throughout the treatment cycle to optimise success.

Surrogacy

For women who are unable to carry a pregnancy, surrogacy provides an alternative path to parenthood. ARGC has a long history of helping families through surrogacy and offers expert guidance on available options.. Our dedicated specialist nurses support intended parents and host surrogates throughout the treatment process, providing essential screening and counselling
